Masterplan Frankfurt

On a selected district of approximately 95 hectares, our team successfully applied our data-driven planning process GreenScenario for optimizing the climate adaptation potential of the Frankfurt competition ‘Nordweststadt’. We validated how our concept minimized the ecological impact or maintained the same level of performance as the existing site condition. Achieving a natural water balance while increasing flood resiliency, providing high quality open spaces and improving outdoor thermal comfort were key goals of the design. The intensive green roofs act as a sponge to catch and slow rainwater runoff while increasing evapotranspiration rates. With over 145.000 m2 of green roofs and a 250% increase of trees, a positive effect on outdoor comfort conditions was able to be achieved.

Museum with Green Roof and Promenade

Grand Canal Museum

After a joint competition win with the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron we are currently working on a thrilling mix of open spaces for the Grand Canal Museum. Everything from the green roof to the promenade and the museum gardens actively contributes to a sustainable storm water management and internal cycles by rainwater usage. In order to improve the local micro climate we also integrate evaporative cooling into the green spaces.

Competition Win for Xiaomeisha Coastal Zone

Together with MLA+ and Colliers we won the competition for the design of Xiaomeisha Coastal Zone in Shenzhen, China.
Xiaomeisha is a beautiful quiet bay area adjacent to the busy city of Shenzhen, sitting between lush forested mountains and the waters of Mirs Bay. Looking to strengthen the gentle and romantic side of the otherwise highly efficient Shenzhen Spirit, our design concedes a place for leisure, where tired minds can rest and revitalize themselves by reconnecting to mountains, people and sea. Xiaomeisha will be a resilient place that can cope with environmental issues, through nature based solutions. Coastal protection measures will be integrated with pathway designs, to enliven the waterfront. On one hand protecting from environmental issues, our Xiaomeisha design also enlivens the local environment. Three ecological corridors connecting the mountains with the sea, will ensure continuous habitat evolution.

Competition Win

"Hafner-Ring" in Constance

In close cooperation with KCAP Architects&Planners, as well as traffic planners ARGUS and energy and sustainability consultant our team has been selected as the winner for the urban planning competition of the new urban development for the Hafner district in Constance, Germany.
The plan envisages a mix of 45 ha of residential and 15 ha of commercial areas, including 2.600 apartments for 8.000 inhabitants. They will be set as several quarters into the soft hills of north-western Constance, creating a truly green neighbourhood. Within a clear structure, naturally embedded into the landscape, a blend of uses and building typologies offers different residential qualities.
In general, the concept stands out by an extremely high flexibility and the ability to react as flexibly as possible to changing conditions and needs.

World Water Day

The Answer is in Nature

UN Water is celebrating the World Water Day presenting Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), to improve water availability, and supply, water quality and risk management.
We want to join this celebration of the World Water Day with a brainstorm on how some of these Nature-Based Solutions could look like: How about protecting Shanghai from flooding from the sea with a great eco barrier? How about reintroducing water into Eindhoven instead of banning it from the city? How about creating a climate hill in Copenhagen?
See below the bold Nature-Based Solutions our Landscape Architects and Engineers came up with.

Winner of German Design Award

Offenbach Harbour

We are delighted for having been awarded “Winner”, for our expertise in design and planning by the German Design Award 2018, in the category Urban Space and Infrastructure.
The Jury evaluated our expertise on the basis of our open-space concept at Offenbach Harbour, situated on the River Main, where an industrial peninsula is being converted into a new sustainable city district. Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl has transformed the initial urban plan by reconnecting public open spaces with their scenic context, creating a liveable as well as ecologically enriching neighbourhood. The site offers different qualities of space, such as a bustling central plaza, a spectacular park at the tip of the peninsula or a unique playground nestled in a neighbourhood park.
This project is one of the great examples of implementing great design into built reality. The collaboration with our client Mainviertel Offenbach GmbH & Co. KG was of central importance to achieve this.

Competition Win for the former Deutsche Bank site in Frankfurt

The new mixed-use, urban city quarter consisting of four high-rise towers and a multi-storey plinth in the heart of Frankfurt, offers solutions to contemporary challenges of urban planning, on one hand through using the available space at maximum capacity in office- and residential buildings and at the same time integrating the site sensitively into the urban context, as well as achieving ambitious sustainable goals.
As City Councilor Mike Josef put it: "The project will play a pioneering role in the transformation of Frankfurt's banking district into a mixed-use quarter. With the new layout of the site and a greater mix of programmes, a new space with a publicly accessible roof area and affordable living space will be created. The centrally located site, which has for a long time been closed, will now be open to the public. This will become a lively neighbourhood, not only for working but also for living."
As consulting experts in the team with UNStudio, we are proud that our design input could significantly contribute to the competition win.

Flood Prevention Capacity was Tested

Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park

As part of the wet monsoon season, Singapore was hit by heavy rain fall last weekend. Culminating in a cloudburst event on monday the 23rd of January, flash floods were caused, challenging Singapore’s resilience.

The flood prevention capacity of the integrated Kallang Riverbed and Bishan- Ang Mo Kio Park was tested during this event, buffering the water towards Bishan Road as well as to the adjacent neighborhoods of the park and thus prohibiting flooding.

A few online articles like the TODAYONLINE one show, how the park was able to handle the recent flooding issues in Singapore by accommodating it through the dynamic process of a river system:
Reopened Esplanade Forecourt Garden

A New Biodiversity Hot Spot in Singapores City Centre

Located in the business and touristic heart of Singapore, the newly re-opened Esplanade Forecourt is designed to bring out the dynamism of a public urban space by integrating two of the most valuable elements in our garden city, namely lush vegetation and water. One enters a forecourt surrounded by a biodiverse shrubbery and signature native trees such as the Gelam Tree, Sea Tristiana, lively tall Rainbow Eucalyptus and the majestic Yellow Rain Trees. The water features provide active and flexible performative spaces, and also pocket spaces of rest in the concrete jungle. As visitors meander through the pathways and water features along the various shrubbery and trees, the landscape itself becomes a performance, changing constantly with time, light and the surrounding.

Inauguration of the Inhalatorium in Badenweiler

The heart of Badenweiler is accessible again

The newly designed „Inhalatorium“ in Badenweiler has been inaugurated and opened to the public again. Since about 15 years the public has been waiting to access this 100-year old building again, which has been going through extensive restoration. One can say that the roman thermal spring, situated in the lower floor of the building is the heart of Badenweiler as it first attracted visitors to stay at the location in order to have access to the medicinal vapors of the water.
In its redesign Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl has been responsible for the architecture of the building, the art objects, the concept of the exhibition and the integration of the surrounding space into the context of the town.

Hendrik Porst, Director of Design says: “the bronze water chalice at the inside of the building and the steps sculpted to lead the water out of the building in a meandering way, are symbol of the significance of the thermal water in Badenweiler.”
